Ik heb een grote zwak voor akoestische gitaarmuziek. Die noem ik liefkozend ‘teenslippermuziek’. Maar ik heb misschien nog wel een grotere zwak voor getalenteerde muzikanten die hun boodschap aan de maatschappij in hun songteksten verwerken. Let dus vooral op de teksten als je de volgende (fijne) nummers beluistert – die zijn echt briljant!
Bret Dennen // Ain’t no reason

But politicians lie and I am not fooled.

Bret Dennen vind ik sowieso een held, puur omdat hij altijd zo trouw is gebleven aan zijn eigen stijl en zich daarmee onderscheidt van iedereen. Hij zegt zelf dat hij altijd een buitenbeentje is geweest. In dit nummer vind ik altijd troost als de wereld even te groot en boos lijkt, want: “I know love will come set me free”.
Trevor Hall // Where’s the love
“Dropping bombs on each other cause it’s what God said
How did we let it get to this
All this fighting makes me sick
The candle has burnt out the wick
And I quit
So many gods but no love for the people
My mama told me that we’re all made equal
What are we fighting for?
Why are we still at war?”
In dit nummer haalt Trevor Hall (die helaas dit jaar zijn tour heeft afgeblazen omdat hij de ziekte van Lyme heeft) het probleem aan dat de wereld zoveel goden en religies kent, maar dat de mensen eigenlijk worden vergeten in onze maatschappij. Kortom, dezelfde boodschap als Bret: meer liefde! Let love be our religion!
Xavier Rudd // Bow down
“I sit here now 2010, government still stealing land
Making lame excuses for their greed
While that oil spills into the sea
And the whalers now still killing whales
And old growth bush still being raped
And I know we all have busy lives
But sing along if you have the time

But don’t forget about the earth

Xavier Rudd is een supergetalenteerd multi-instrumentalist uit Australië. Hij komt op voor de situatie van de Aboriginals en roept mensen tevens op om te zorgen voor het milieu. Xavier Rudd speelt zelf ook didgeridoo, een oorspronkelijk Aboriginal instrument.
Jack Johnson // Sleep through the static

Jack Johnson is mijn all-time favoriet. Hij is zeer actief op het gebied van milieubescherming en op zijn eigen zachte wijze verwerkt hij in zijn nummers ook een boodschap aan onze maatschappij. In het nummer Sleep through the static houdt hij de maatschappij een spiegel voor en plaatst hij op subtiele wijze vragen bij de keuzes die gemaakt zijn in de oorlog tussen Amerika en Irak.
Joss Stone // Governmentalist
“Trying to get a hold of smoke and water
Coming up with nothing every time
How come we ain’t getting any closer
Trying to find the truth behind the lies?

I’m an ordinary project dude
I’m subject to genetically modified food
That’s FDA approved, mass produced
So can you tell a lie from the truth?”
Ik weet niet hoe jullie erover denken, maar Joss Stone is één van mijn grootste voorbeelden. Ze bracht dit jaar nog een nieuwe CD uit met een nieuwe (wereldse) sound waar ik helemaal fan van ben. Dit nummer, featuring Nas, is van een oud album, maar slaat wel heel erg de spijker op zijn kop wat betreft de voedingsindustrie, genetische modificatie en de rol van de (Amerikaanse) overheid en politiek in deze kwestie. Kritische vragen stellen, right on – you go, Joss!
Bob Dylan // Masters of war
“Let me ask you one question

De koning van de protestmuziek is uiteraard Bob Dylan. Hij is nooit bang om zijn mening te uiten en in zijn nummers te verwerken. Met natuurlijk als kroon op zijn werk ‘Masters of war’, een rechtstreekse aanval op de Amerikaanse officials en de oorlogsindustrie. Wist je trouwens dat Bob Dylan met zijn 74 jaar nog steeds optreedt? In november stond hij nog in de HMH! Helaas kon ik er niet bij zijn, maar ik heb veel respect voor deze man.
